Untitled Self-Portraits
2018 - present
My ongoing engagement with self-portrait photography over the years has been both contemplative and pedagogical—a practice of scrutinizing and honoring subjectivity. For me, it is an act of unmasking, a pursuit of freedom, a chronicle of mortality, and a space to explore what it means to exist in the world as “me”.
There is something inherently seductive and revealing about occupying
a position on both sides of the camera. I become actor and director, spectator and spectacle, observer and observed–enacting a quiet inversion of consciousness, like meeting my own gaze in a mirror. In this reflexive act of meta-consciousness (i.e., awareness of one’s own awareness), not only am I ‘doing’ or ‘being’; I am reflecting on the doing/being as it transpires, and further transmuting these reflections in visual and embodied language.
These visual records were rarely created with strict conceptual foresight. Instead, they emerged from a place of automatism and intuitive creation. This surrender of analytical control—allowing expression to arise from feeling rather than thought—is what makes the practice so gratifying for me. We are rarely afforded the chance to give ourselves over to the subconscious, to move from thinking, to feeling, to mediation.
Of course, while these images often began without deliberate planning, my recurring attraction to particular props, gestures, or narrative tropes can always be understood in retrospect—revealing patterns that speak to deeper internal processes and symbolic associations.
